What does it take to be an AME?
Unfortunately, there is no process to convert an AME license issued from another Aviation Authority to a Canadian Aircraft Maintenance Engineers license.
The Canadian Aviation Regulations, Standard 566 (CAR STD 566), requires the following with respect to applicants who obtained their basic training through training systems other than a Transport Canada Approved Training Organization (e.g., foreign, military, distance learning, etc.):
- Application – You must complete the AME Licence Application Supplement, form 26-0638, for approval to attempt the Transport Canada technical examinations.
- Age – Prior to license issuance you must be 21 years of age or older.
- Citizenship – You must provide documentation to show your citizenship (Canadian or other).
- Basic theoretical training – You must have successfully completed basic training applicable to the rating requested (M, E, or S). You must submit your graduation certificate, transcript and course curriculum for the training received to Transport Canada for assessment against the requirements listed in CAR STD 566. The assessment of documents can ONLY be accomplished by Transport Canada. Any pre-assessments conducted by an organization, or an applicant will not be taken into account. The submitted documents must indicate:
- Issuance by the training organization (e.g., original school letterhead with school stamps or seals, signed and dated by the Dean of the school or equivalent)
- The number of theory hours (minimum of 1000 hours theory training applicable to the M and E rating, 550 for the S rating)
- The curriculum, transcript and certificate are all from the same training organization (information on all three documents match) and are from the same time period (curriculum submitted was applicable at the time of the dates on the transcript and certificate)
- Knowledge (technical examinations) – If the assessment of the basic training is successful, you will be granted approval to attempt the Transport Canada technical examinations.
- Application – Once you have successfully passed the technical exams, you must complete the Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Licence Application, form 24-0083.
- Experience – You must have acquired the applicable amount of total, specialty, and civil aviation maintenance experience set forth in CAR STD 566. The “M or E” ratings require a total of 48 months experience, with 12 months dedicated to the specialty requested and 6 months maintenance experience on civil registered aircraft. The “S” rating requires a total of 36 months experience, with 24 months dedicated to the specialty requested and 6 months maintenance on civil registered aircraft.
- Skill – You must have performed a representative selection of eligible maintenance tasks, over the full range of applicable systems and structures.
- Regulatory requirements examination – Within 6 months of the required 48 months, you can be authorized to attempt the Transport Canada regulatory requirements examination, however you will not be issued a license until all of the requirements have been met.
- Fee(s) – You must submit the applicable fees as outlined in CAR 104.
